First pick a wood species, Hemlock or White Pine. Next pick a floor plan such as cabin 101 or cabin 102. Please note that the interior layout can be changed to fit your needs. Cabin 101 is 18 x 26 with a loft that covers about half of the cabin. You can have a staircase, circular stairs, or a ladder. Cabin 102 is the exact same structure as 101, but it has a stick built addition on the back. The stick built addition is less expensive than log cabin walls and it can have traditional materials such as insulation and wood siding. Cabin 102 can have a loft and two bedrooms on the back of the cabin. Either option can be built on a basement to add cheep square footage. Next pick a log style.
Either authentic chinking or dry stack. Authentic chinking cost a
little more in the long run, but it offers the original Appalachian
style log cabin. The dry stack does not require chinking between
logs, but chinking can be added for aesthetics. The dry stack is a 6
x 12 log with a double tongue and groove with two strips of
weather-stripping between the logs. |
